Self Guided Tour: Craft Beer Edition

Craft beer lovers rejoice! Citrusy IPA, smooth stouts, and saison are some of the city’s favorites. San Francisco has enough collection of small batch breweries to satisfy even the biggest hop head you know.

If you’re a craft beer enthusiast, San Francisco’s many breweries and tap rooms will welcome you with open arms. With a dozen breweries in the city, plus many high end watering holes, finding your next favorite beer is not going to be difficult.

The more difficult part is figuring out where to go. Most of SF’s breweries are located south of Market Street in separate loose groupings in Dogpatch and South Beach. I would recommend sticking to an area per night or taking UBER/Lyft.

For a guided craft-beer experience (that is not a pub crawl) I recommend this highly rated tour – beer bites and history included!

Breweries in SOMA/South Beach

21st Amendment Brewery & Restaurant
Food: There’s a full on restaurant on site.
Close to At&T park and start up offices, this spot is almost always crowded. Honestly, their beers never quite blew my mind but they have so many beers on rotation that maybe it’s just a matter of time until I find one that I like.

Black Hammer Brewing
Taster flight available – $16 for 4
Food: No food, but bringing your own food is allowed.
This is a mellow, friendly bar with great ambiance. There are food options around the corner: pizza, burger, Thai food, etc.

Pacific Brewing Laboratory
Sharing a roof with Black Hammer Brewery, they’re known for their creative beers such as Squid Ink (IBA) and their saison.

Local Brewing Co.
Food: Snacks/sandwiches available.

Cellarmaker Brewing Co.
Food: No food, but bringing your own food is allowed.

Breweries in Dogpatch

Harmonic Brewing
Taster flight available ($18 for 7)
Food: snacks (chips & popcorn) & food truck fare, bringing your own food is also allowed.
With 12 beers on tap, a light and spacious tap room, Harmonic Brewery is one of my favorites. It’s one of the few places in the city that makes nitros.

Magnolia Brewing Company

Triple Voodoo Brewery
Taster flight available.
Brewery tours available. Check for hours.
Belgian and West Coast style beer.
Food: No food, but bringing your own food is allowed.

Speakeasy Ales & Lagers
Taster flight available

Breweries in Haight/Duboce

Black Sands Brewery
Food: Lunch and dinner available $8 – $15.

San Francisco Brewing Co. Tap Room
Food: No food, but the tap room is located in a food court type of establishment.
The saison was phenomenal. This place is not a bar, more like a stand in a food hall establishment.

Standard Deviant Brewing
It’s a great warehouse space with pinball machines and board games. Solid selection of beers that are reasonably priced ($3 for 8oz, $6 for 16oz). No food available.

Pro tip: Every third Wednesday of the month, SF Brewer Guild runs a FREE #DrinkSFBeer shuttle. The shuttle makes stops at different breweries for a ‘hop on, hop off’ drinking experience. The meeting time and the stops are different each month so check out the website for info.
